Ruidoso River Museum — Titanic

TITANIC

Who could forget Leonardo DiCaprio’s and Kate Winslet’s stunning performances in Hollywood blockbuster film Titanic. That epic movie placed the Titanic and its dreadful fate back into the public’s consciousness and the interest in the doomed steamer has not waned.

Hollywood aside, The Ruidoso River Museum offers artifacts and personal items from unfortunate passengers recovered from the icy ocean depths where the real shipwreck lies. Letters, Lifejackets, Silverware and a collection of other interesting items from the famous ship’s remains are on display.

The Titanic made its maiden voyage on the night of 14 April 1912 when it struck an iceberg, and sank two hours and forty minutes later, early on 15 April 1912. For her time, she was the largest passenger steamship in the world.

The sinking resulted in the deaths of over 1,500 people, making it one of the most costly, in terms of lives, peacetime maritime disasters in history. The high casualty rate was due in part to the fact that, while compliant with the regulations of the time, the ship did not carry enough lifeboats for everyone aboard.

And don’t think the High Desert can't house a collection of flotsam and jetsam from, this, one of the world’s most famous shipwrecks!
